The The Water Moccasin Snake: Appearance, biology, life cycle, habitat, diet, behavior

Of all the water snakes in North America, the water moccasin is the only one with venom. It has a vicious bite and for this, it has earned itself a fearsome reputation even though it seldom attacks people. This same snake is also widely referred to as cottonmouth and in some other places, it is called water mamba or even black moccasin.

Appearance and Biology
The water moccasin snake is immediately recognizable with its well-built body and a stocky head shaped like a triangle. Like rattlesnakes and copperheads, water moccasins are also pit vipers. Hence, they have pits that detect heat located in the space between their nostrils and eyes. In terms of size, water moccasins are comparatively big with length ranging from 2 to 4 feet.

Life Cycle
Among water moccasins, the mating is in spring. Once the process starts, the males become hyperactive, move all over while shaking their tails in a bid to attract the females from other potential mates. Fights can also break out among the males over females. They incubate eggs inside the bodies of the females who then give birth to live young every few years.

Habitat
The natural habitat for the water moccasin is primarily the southeastern portion of the United States, all the way from Florida to Virginia. They are often seen in water bodies like lakes, ponds, rivers and also in swamps and marshlands.

Diet
As they dwell more in aquatic surroundings, water moccasins feed on fish. They also eat birds, birds, turtles, frogs, and other snakes too.

Behavior

Water moccasins are fond of swimming near the surface of the water, often popping their heads above. They are active during day time and also at night. However, they hunt mainly at night and can be seen all throughout the year.
